The Bates Masonic Scholarship Fund was created to assist the youth of Cullman County in furthering their education, particularly those who might not have the means otherwise. The Fund was named in honor of a father and son who have made significant contributions to Cullman County. The late Brother Lem Bates was known as "Mr. Mason" for many years. He served his home lodge, Trimble 739, in many capacities, including several terms as Worshipful Master and served the 6th District as District Lecturer for many years. But Brother Lem is best remembered for his ability to teach the Masonic lessons to newly made Brothers. He could make the student see and feel the lesson as he taught it, so that he would come to understand the symbolism and significance of every part. His son, Brother Robert Bates, currently serves as Clerk of the Circuit Court in Cullman County. He too has served Trimble Lodge in every capacity, including Worshipful Master and is also The District 6 Lecturer and has been for over 20 years. Brother Bates has also served the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge as the Chairman for the Committee on Work and as a Commitie Member. The high regard that the brethren of Cullman County have for these men led to the Fund being named in their honors
